On Tuesday, May 6 at 5 pm, the Municipality of Athens will proceed with a tree planting event at the Evelpidon Grove and invites the residents and friends of the Grove to actively participate in this important effort. The Director of Greening of the Municipality of Athens, Dimitrios Tsagaropoulos, has prepared a full report on the state of the Grove and the Municipality of Athens' plan to address its problems, in order to inform the residents and friends of the Grove.

Pedion tou Areos, the “green heart” of Athens, is more than just a large urban garden. It is a public space, that is, a space that belongs to everyone, alive and (ideally) multifunctional. What makes a public space truly successful?

On the weekend of April 5-6, 2025, Pedion tou Areos hosted the Woof Festival, a celebration of joy aimed at raising awareness for animals, responsible adoption, and the importance of the human-animal relationship. The festival, full of activities, demonstrations, and hands-on workshops, managed to create a very positive experience for young and old.

Public spaces are the heart of a city’s social life: parks, squares, pedestrian streets and common areas are places for citizens to meet, create and relax. However, international studies, such as “The State of Public Space in 2025” in which 57 countries from around the world participated, show that excessive bureaucracy is a significant obstacle to their creation and maintenance. From the time-consuming licensing process to the lack of flexibility in management, public spaces are suffocating under the weight of administrative rigidity.

Urban biodiversity refers to the variety of living organisms found in cities, including plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms. In Athens, this biodiversity manifests itself through parks, groves, gardens, and even small green spaces between buildings. The Pedion tou Areos, for example, is home to over 70 plant species, mainly of Greek and Mediterranean origin, providing shelter to a diverse range of fauna.

Spending time in green spaces, such as local parks, can improve mood, reduce feelings of stress or anger, boost self-esteem, reduce loneliness, and help a person feel more relaxed and connected to nature and the wider community.

The official opening of the Attica Region Christmas Village at Pedion tou Areos was declared by Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias on Sunday evening with a light and drone show.
